Post 2: Channel 4

I researched Channel 4 so that I could find out more about the type of broadcaster it is, and what type of audience watches Channel 4. I did this by looking at the Channel website and TV guide.

I learnt that Channel 4 is owned by Channel Four Television Corporation and first began transmission on the 2nd of November 1982. It receives an average of 6.5 million viewers per day and they are most commonly known for 'Great British Bake Off' and 'The Simpsons'. Its ultimately publicly owned and is broadcasted in the UK and Ireland. Their main demographic is males and females, aged 18-30, according to their PSB remit. Furthermore, in their remit, they guarantee to be innovative, experimental and creative, and to appeal to the tastes of a culturally diverse society.

I found out about the type of programmes that air on Channel 4, especially on weekdays during 7-9pm. The Channel 4 style of adverts are very youth-orientated, such as 'Gogglebox' and 'Hollyoaks'. Hollyoaks is a popular soap opera appealing to 16-35 year old, males and females. It receives 2.4 million viewers per episode and is aired on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30-7pm. I also looked at the programmes airing before 7pm and after 9pm to get a sense of what my target audience would be waiting to watch. For example, Gogglebox airs at 11pm on Thursdays, which also appeals to a similar target audience as mine.'The Simpsons' air during the day, followed by 'Naked Attraction' in the evening, which both appeal to a similar target audience to mine.

Research on Channel 4
This research helped me to decide when to air my adverts: 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This way, I can maximise audience reach by placing it right after Hollyoaks and before Naked Attraction on Tuesdays and before Gogglebox on Thursdays. In conclusion, placing my adverts in these slots, will maximise view ratings.
